UV damage is cumulative. Every decade counts. Why UV protective clothing isn't just for children – and what 25 years of experience teach us about textile sun protection.
Skin Cancer: The most common type of cancer in Germany
Many adults believe UV protection is only a topic for children. The numbers tell a different story. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Germany – and new diagnoses have been rising for years. The main reason: cumulative UV damage over decades.
While 80% of lifetime UV dose accumulates before age 18, the remaining 20% often determine the final diagnosis. Every additional sunburn and every unprotected hour adds up. UV protection in adulthood is not just a precaution – it is damage control.
UV radiation is not just a vacation topic
Most UV exposure happens in everyday life, not at the beach. During commutes, lunch breaks, in the garden, or while exercising. These are situations where very few people think about sun protection.
Outdoor Sports
Running, cycling, tennis, golf – 2+ hours in the sun, often without reapplication. Sweat washes away sunscreen.
Water Sports
Swimming, sailing, SUP, surfing – water reflects up to 25% of UV radiation. Double exposure from above and below.
Hiking & Mountains
UV levels increase by 10–12% per 1,000 meters of altitude. Cool winds and thin air can mask the intensity.
Gardening & Leisure
Hours spent in the garden, on the balcony, or at a BBQ. Cumulative exposure that is rarely perceived as a UV risk.
Lunch Breaks & Commuting
A 30-minute lunch break outside, 5 days a week. Over months, this adds up to a significant UV dose.
Vacation & Travel
Southern Europe, tropics, Mediterranean. UV exposure on vacation is often twice as high as at home, combined with more time outdoors.
Why sunscreen alone is not enough
Sunscreen is better than nothing. But for reliable, everyday UV protection, it has clear limits. Especially for active adults.
UV Clothing UPF 80
- Protects instantly upon putting it on
- No applying cream, no sticky feeling
- Stays active during sports, swimming, and sweating
- No reapplication every 2 hours necessary
- No missed spots (back, shoulders)
- No chemicals on the skin
- Dries in 10–15 minutes
Sunscreen Alone
- Must be applied 20 min. before sun contact
- Must be reapplied every 2 hours
- Rubbed off by sweat and movement
- Greasy feeling, interferes with sports
- Back is nearly impossible to reach without help
- Studies: Most people only apply 25–50% of the recommended amount
- Chemical filters are increasingly under criticism
To achieve the SPF listed on the bottle, you would need to apply 2 mg of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. For an adult's upper body, that's about 36 ml – for every single application. Most people use significantly less.
Smart combination: Use a UV shirt for the upper body and sunscreen only for the face, hands, and legs. This massively reduces the area needing cream and increases the reliability of your overall protection.
What defines high-quality UV clothing for adults
UV protective clothing for adults must do more than just protect. It has to fit into daily life – whether for sports, vacation, or the office after a lunch break.
| Criterion | Recommended | Questionable |

| Comfort | Athletic fit, breathable, suitable for daily use | Stiff "sun protection look", only for the beach |

| Production | Europe (transparent quality, short distances) | Asia (20,000+ km transport route) |
Since 2001: From protecting children to the whole family
hyphen was founded in 2001 – as the first provider of UV protective clothing in Germany. Our starting point: baby skin needs the best protection. But parents who recognized the difference quickly asked the obvious question: Why isn't this available for us too?
For 25 years, hyphen has stood for the same principles – for baby, child, and adult clothing alike: UV Standard 801, UPF 80, OEKO-TEX tested, sewn in Croatia. What began as protection for the little ones is now a line for the entire family. From size 68 to XL. Same standard, no compromises.
Many parents discover hyphen through their children. And then they ask: Is this available for me too? For 25 years, the answer has been: Yes. Same standard, same material, same quality. From the cradle to the surfboard.
UV protection that doesn't interfere with your performance
hyphen UV clothing consists of 78% Polyamide and 22% Elastane – a material made for active people. Lighter than cotton, quick-drying, and breathable. Whether you are running, swimming, hiking, or cycling – the UV shirt works with your body, not against it.
Swimming & Water Sports
Protects in the water as well as on land. Dries in 10–15 minutes.
Running & Cycling
Breathable and moisture-regulating. No sticking, no heat buildup.
Hiking & Trekking
Lightweight in your pack, quick-drying after a rain shower. Protects even at high altitudes.
Tennis & Golf
Full freedom of movement thanks to Elastane. No need to apply cream between sets.
Sailing & SUP
Saltwater resistant, quick-drying, reliable protection against water reflection.
Gardening & Leisure
