SunProtec Cap 'mink'
SunProtec Cap 'mink' detachable Head, Face, Neck – the three forgotten zones.
No part of the body receives more UV radiation than the head. And nowhere is protection forgotten more often. What a UV cap must be able to do – and why a normal hat is not enough.
Most UV radiation hits the head
The head, face, and neck are closest to the sun – and the most exposed. While the torso can be protected by a UV shirt, the head and neck often remain the last gap in UV protection. Sunscreen on the scalp? Impractical. On the neck? Frequently forgotten. On the ears? Almost never.
Dermatologists warn: The face, ears, scalp, and neck are among the most common sites for skin cancer – precisely because they are constantly exposed to the sun and often missed when applying sunscreen. A UV cap with UPF 80 closes exactly this protection gap.
Neck protection: Why it is so important
The neck is one of the most UV-stressed areas of the body – and simultaneously the most frequently forgotten. When bending over, playing, cycling, or running, the neck is directly facing the sun. Sunscreen is rarely applied here and even less frequently reapplied.
Babies & Toddlers
Neck skin is extremely thin, and hair growth provides no protection. In strollers or while crawling, the neck is often directed straight at the sun.
Protection: essentialChildren
When playing, romping, and playing sports, the neck is constantly exposed. Sunscreen is the first thing to be sweated off – and the last to be reapplied.
Protection: highly recommendedAdults
Gardening, hiking, cycling, outdoor sports – during long hours in the sun, the UV dose on the neck accumulates over years.
Protection: highly recommendedThe neck is among the five most common sites for basal cell carcinoma – the most frequent form of skin cancer. In children, the neck skin is particularly sensitive because it is thinner and the pigment cells are not yet fully functional. Integrated neck protection on a UV cap closes this gap – without the need for sunscreen, without being forgotten.
The solution: UV caps with integrated or removable neck protection. At hyphen, the SunProtec Caps offer permanently sewn neck protection, while the "detachable" version offers a removable one – depending on the situation and preference. This way, the neck is protected without you having to think about it.
Which UV cap for which use?
Not every situation requires the same hat. hyphen offers various models – all with UPF 80 according to UV Standard 801, but optimized for different requirements.

UV Cap vs. Normal Cap: What really protects you
A cap on your head is better than none. But the difference between a normal cotton cap and a certified UV cap is greater than most people think.
UV Cap UPF 80
- UPF 80 – less than 1.3% UV transmission
- Protection tested even when wet, stretched, and used
- Integrated neck protection available
- Quick-drying after swimming
- Wide peak protects face and ears
- Lighter than cotton, more comfortable to wear
- OEKO-TEX tested – no harmful substances
Normal Cotton Cap
- UPF 5–15 – up to 20% UV transmission
- Protection drops even further when wet
- No neck protection, ears exposed
- Dries slowly, becomes heavy
- Narrow peak only protects the forehead
- Heavier and warmer on the head
- No testing for harmful substances
A light-colored cotton shirt has a UPF of only 5–10. The same applies to caps: the fabric alone provides hardly any protection. When wet – for example, after swimming or sweating – the UPF value of a normal cap drops significantly once again. With a UV cap with UPF 80 according to UV Standard 801, the protection is tested and guaranteed even when wet and stretched.
What you should look for in a UV cap
"UV protection" is written on many caps. But not every one delivers what the label promises. These criteria help you distinguish real protection from marketing.
| Criterion | Recommended | Questionable |
|---|---|---|
| UV Standard | UV Standard 801 (tested wet, stretched, used) | Tested only in new condition or no standard at all |
| UPF Value | UPF 80 (under 1.3% UV transmission) | UPF 30–50 (lower protection reserve) |
| Neck Protection | Integrated or removable, with UPF certification | No neck protection or non-certified neck cloth |
| Toxin Testing | OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | No independent testing for harmful substances |
| Material | Quick-drying, lightweight, suitable for water | Cotton (heavy, slow-drying, UPF drops when wet) |
| Brim / Peak | Wide enough for face, ears, and neck | Narrow peak, only forehead protected |
| Size Range | Baby to Adult (Size 42/44 to 58/60) | Only individual sizes, not for the whole family |

60% more protection reserve than UPF 50+
UPF 50+ is the industry standard. hyphen exceeds it – in every condition.
Since 2001: UV protection for babies out of conviction
When hyphen was founded in 2001, there was practically no UV protection clothing for babies in Germany. Sunscreen was the standard – although dermatologists do not recommend it for babies under 6 months. hyphen changed that and relied on the strictest standard from the beginning: UV STANDARD 801 with UPF 80.
25 years later, more and more parents know: Textile UV protection is the better way for baby skin. But the core conviction with which hyphen started remains unchanged: Babies deserve the best protection possible. Tested under real conditions, not just in the laboratory.
