UV damage is cumulative. Every decade counts. Why UV protective clothing isn't just for children – and what 25 years of experience teaches us about textile sun protection.
Skin Cancer: The Most Common Type of Cancer in Germany
Many adults believe UV protection is a topic only for children. The numbers tell a different story. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Germany – and new diagnoses have been rising for years. The main reason: cumulative UV damage over decades.
80% of a lifetime UV dose accumulates before the age of 18. But the remaining 20% often determines the diagnosis. Every additional sunburn, every unprotected hour adds up. UV protection in adulthood is not just a precaution – it is damage control.
Why Sunscreen Alone Is Not Enough
Sunscreen is better than nothing. But for reliable, everyday UV protection, it has clear limits. Especially for active people.
UV Clothing UPF 80
- Protects immediately upon putting it on
- No applying cream, no sticky feeling
- Stays active during sports, swimming, and sweating
- No re-application needed every 2 hours
- No missed spots (back, shoulders)
- No chemicals on the skin
- Dries in 10–15 minutes
Sunscreen Alone
- Must be applied 20 min. before sun exposure
- Requires re-application every 2 hours
- Wiped off by sweat and movement
- Greasy feeling, interferes with sports
- Back is hard to reach without help
- Studies: Most people only apply 25–50% of the recommended amount
- Chemical filters are increasingly under criticism
To achieve the sun protection factor (SPF) stated on the pack, you would need to apply 2 mg of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. For an adult's upper body, that is about 36 ml – per application. Most people use significantly less.
Sensible Combination: A UV shirt for the upper body, sunscreen only for the face, hands, and legs. This drastically reduces the area needing cream and increases the reliability of overall protection.
What Makes High-Quality UV Clothing
UV protective clothing must do more than just protect. It has to fit into daily life – during sports, on vacation, or at the office after a lunch break.

| Production | Europe (transparent quality, short distances) | Asia (20,000+ km transport route) |
Since 2001: From Child Protection to the Whole Family
hyphen was founded in 2001 – as the first provider of UV protective clothing in Germany. The starting point: baby skin needs the best protection. But parents who recognized the difference soon asked the obvious question: Why isn't this available for us too?
For 25 years, hyphen has stood for the same principles – for baby, children, and adult clothing alike: UV Standard 801, UPF 80, OEKO-TEX tested, sewn in Croatia. What began as protection for the little ones is now a line for the whole family. From size 68 (6 months) to XL. Same standard, no compromises.
Many parents get to know hyphen through their children. And then they ask: Is this available for me too? For 25 years, the answer has been: Yes. Same standard, same material, same quality. From the cradle to the surfboard.
UV Protection That Doesn’t Get in the Way
